There goes my light novel-esque title. Greetings! There were a couple of technical issues with my blog last week, so I couldn’t post my Friday BL but got the OK from WordPress that it’s alright to post while they sort things out, so we’re back on track. Animated shorts have a very special place in my heart as I’ve done another list last year, and I’m back, gracing your reader with commercial ads today. Enjoy ~
1. LOTTE x BUMP OF CHICKEN
Ever since I got to hear their opening theme for Kekkai Sensen, I’ve been a fan of Bump of Chicken’s music. The band has composed other songs for anime and ads alike, this extremely colorful, diverse, and heartwarming Lotte ad that commemorates their 70th anniversary quickly earned its place on my list. 12/10 convinced me to buy a bar of chocolate if I’m to visit Japan again.
2. NESCAFE HONG KONG
Nothing better than your daily dose of mindless, sugary optimism that’ll motivate you to work harder for the man. There’s still a warmth to the ad that I’m sure it’ll move even the most jaded of us all. I’m not a fan of instant coffee, but 8/10 will grab a can because the animators worked hard and did a wonderful job on the ad.
3. NISSIN NOODLE x ONE PIECE
Quick! Look away as I squeeze in another ad with a Bump of Chicken composed song. Nissin ads never fail to amaze me, and this Hungry Days collaboration with One Piece and Bump of Chicken is no exception. It has a full-length music video as well, and it’s reimagining One Piece characters as regular high school students. I couldn’t get past the 3rd episode of One Piece, but both of the videos have great animation, good music, kendo, and high school angst; what more can I ask for! 7/10 convinced me to give One Piece another chance since I don’t need convincing when it comes to noodles.
4. SATSUMA SHIRANAMI
Satsuma Shiranami is apparently a type of shochu distilled from sweet potatoes. This ad hit me with the bittersweet nostalgia of growing up and our ever-changing relationship with our parents. The different kami that is believed to inhabit everywhere including inanimate objects according to Shinto belief gives the ad a subtle spirituality, and a sense of endless flow from one generation to the other. 14/10 would like to try shochu and hope it’ll have me cross paths with such a beautiful and kind lady too.
5. “SOBA E” MARUI GROUP x ORANGE
When I first came across this ad as I was browsing Studio Orange’s page, I didn’t even understand what the ad was for. Turns out, it’s for a retail company that focuses on women’s clothing and accessories. Fair enough! It’s a full-CG short that had me swoon with how pretty and smooth it was. I should expect nothing less from the capable hands that worked on Beastars. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to buy after watching the ad, but I’m 10/10 ready to consume.
These were my picks! Do you have a favorite animated CM that made you slam your fist on the table and scream “I’m sold!”? Any from my picks that caught your interest? Let me know in the comments and have an awesome day!
